Abstract

Evaluation of Pelican Crossing Usage Interaction and Its Impact on Road Performance at Hasanudin Street, Denpasar was conducted to address the problem of how pelican crossings affect road capacity and level of service. The background of this study arises from the high traffic volume on Hasanudin Street influenced by pedestrian crossing activities, which potentially reduce road performance. The objectives are to analyze the road level of service, the impact of pelican crossing interaction, and to determine the appropriate type of crossing facility. The research method applied a field survey approach by collecting primary data such as road geometry, traffic volume, number of pelican crossing users, side friction, and vehicle speed, as well as secondary data regarding Denpasar city. Data analysis referred to the Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual (MKJI, 1997) to calculate road capacity, degree of saturation (DS), level of service (LOS), and the need for crossing facilities using the PV² method. The results show that pelican crossings increase side friction and reduce road performance. The degree of saturation with a pelican crossing reached 0.8519 (LOS E), while without it decreased to 0.7963 (LOS D). This indicates an increase of about 6.53% in DS due to pelican crossing interaction. Thus, pelican crossings play an important role in pedestrian safety but negatively affect traffic flow efficiency.
