Abstract

The selection of appropriate building materials significantly influences cost efficiency, quality, and time in construction project implementation. One of the essential components in structural work is wall masonry. This study aims to compare the efficiency of cost, quality, and time between the use of lightweight bricks (AAC blocks) and conventional clay bricks in the construction project of SMP Negeri 4 Mengwi. The method used was direct field observation over 14 days by recording the daily work volume, number of workers, and working duration. The results show that using lightweight bricks produced an average productivity of 36.16 m²/day, completing a total work volume of 2,210.40 m² in 62 days. In contrast, conventional bricks achieved a productivity of only 26.85 m²/day, requiring 83 days to complete the same volume. In terms of cost, the total expense for lightweight brick masonry was Rp411,401,647.50, while conventional brick masonry amounted to Rp310,879,170.00. Regarding quality, lightweight bricks offer better dimensional precision, thermal and sound insulation, and ease of finishing. On the other hand, conventional bricks have advantages in compressive strength and weather resistance, but take longer to install and tend to result in less tidy walls if not handled properly. This study provides an objective overview of the strengths and weaknesses of each brick type, serving as a reference for material selection decisions in construction projects.
