Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OHS) is a crucial aspect in the construction industry, given the high potential risk of workplace accidents that can impact worker safety, project smoothness, and even material losses. In a construction project environment, various types of heavy equipment, hazardous chemicals, and dynamic field working conditions are key factors that must be closely monitored. This study was conducted to evaluate the level of understanding and application of OHS principles in construction projects based on the perceptions of OHS implementers and experts, and to identify the most dominant factors causing workplace accidents. This study used a quantitative approach through a survey method using a questionnaire distributed to 30 respondents, consisting of project implementers and OHS experts. The data collected included an assessment of OHS implementation and a classification of potential causes of workplace accidents in the field. The analysis showed that the majority of respondents rated OHS implementation as "Applied," with an average indicator score ranging from 3.0 to 3.5. Meanwhile, the analysis of the accident cause classifications showed that the three main factors—the use of project equipment, hazardous materials, and heavy equipment—all fell into the "Not Occurred" (TT) category, with an overall average score of 1.399. This indicates that the risk of workplace accidents in the surveyed projects is very low and that OHS procedures have been consistently implemented.

Nevertheless, this study also emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement in OHS training, risk evaluation, field supervision, and instilling a safety culture across all levels of the organization. Therefore, the success of OHS implementation depends not only on formal regulations but also on the active involvement of all project stakeholders, from management to field workers. It is hoped that the results of this study can serve as a reference for developing more effective and sustainable OHS policies in the construction industry.
