Abstract

In writing essays, especially scientific essays, it is obligatory to arrange them with effective sentences in addition to applying other writing rules such as the use of vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Effective sentences are sentences that have the ability to re-create ideas in the minds of listeners or readers like what was in the minds of the speaker or writer. Effective sentences prioritize effectiveness so that the clarity of the sentence can be guaranteed.

This paper analyzes the use of effective sentences in the writings of students of the Japanese Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Udayana University, especially class B students who are taking Indonesian courses in the even semester 2020/2021. The sample selection is done by random sampling. After the data has been collected, identification and classification are carried out to determine the correlation according to the purpose of the study. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be seen that most of the students' writings have been prepared with the correct sentences. However, there are still some sentences that do not qualify as effective sentences. The sentences that are not effective are because they do not meet the following characteristics/requirements: (1) unity and equivalence; (2) cohesiveness; (3) parallelism (parallel); (4) frugality; and (5) logic
